Depends what state you are in. If it is a "no-fault divorce" state the divorce will go through as is, some as early as 20 days so act fast. If you are contesting it, wanting more time, or need some mediation, consult a lawyer specializing in divorce or family matters. They will no doubt send a letter to their lawyer with your wishes spelled out. The lawyer may want a retainer fee to get things started--it is well worth it. If there are children involved, then you will have to resolve their arrangements, and the joint property will need to be divided. If the lawyers or you and your ex can't agree on things, it may go to court, which means more fees and time involved.
Be wary, sometimes even if you didn't ask for the divorce, you could owe the other person money (if you want to hang on to more of the joint property or if you made more money then the other person through the marriage.) It is better to sell whatever it is if you can and split the money than owe an ex money.
Also, have a good close friend or family member help you through the process. They will be good emotional support and help you remember what all you are suppose to do.

Sign them sign them sign them! My ex- refused to sign multiple times to make tiny changes, it took a lot longer than needed, still the same end result, I still wanted the divorce. Delaying things will not make anyone swoon and change their mind. Finish it up before lawyers get into it and it gets ugly and expensive.
