Hi! I have a website called http://geek-zone.gigcities.com and I was wondering how can i promote it over the internet.
i submitted it to google, but when i search for it to verify, there's no response.
what can i do first to appear on a search engine an then to increase it's rank.

Different search engines have functionalities that would allow users to submit sites for free. How it usually works is, you would need to browse to the category in which you want your site to appear. There will be a submission link somewhere on that page to let you submit your site. It usually takes a week or two for your site to appear on the search engine though. Once it is submitted, you don't have to submit again. However, what most search engines do is, they would cache your web page. If you don't want the search engine to cache your page, you would need to do something on your end to not allow that to happen.

As knitting_guy_one has explained this process very nicely, i would like to add that, there are so many softwares available on the internet which can help you in submitting websites automatically to almost all the search engines.
Internet Business Promoter is one such kinda software, well if you search on GOOGLE or some download sites, you will be presented with so many softwares.

There are a number of free resources available to advertise your website and increase traffic. You can advertise on relevant free classifieds ( www.craigslist.org) ,directories (dmoz) and relevant forums. Major search engines like Yahoo, Google , MSN search are a major source of visitors for most websites and you can submit your website to these search engines for free. You can also run contests offering prizes to regular visitors. I have found the following website useful
