Get her a few new pair of some nice pajamas or night gowns, and a new bath robe. She'll be tired, and sometimes it's nice to hang out all day in your pajamas when staying home with a new baby. This way when people pop in (as they often do with a new baby), she'll still look nice even though she's still comfy.

Gift certificates for take out food! Those were the best! The last thing in the world I wanted to do after a new baby was cook.
Also, I had a friend that took me out for a pedicure two weekd after the birth of the baby. It was a quick outing away from the babe and just the pampering I needed.

I recieved a great gift from a friend of mine...it was a care package. It had luxurious bubble bath and floating flowers, a candle, some gourmet chocolate, lotion and body spray. THe scent was very light so it didnt bother me or the baby. To this, I think it would be great to add, a relaxing CD with a shower CD player, and a pair of really cushy slippers.
The new mom will not be sleeping much for a few weeks. These pampering items will help refresh her and make her feel special.
Congrats on your new niece!

I knew some girls who on a particular night sent a casserole, another sent the salad, and another signed up for the dessert.I thought that was sooo cool! They actually had it worked out for a few days.It might have been a church group but any family could do it.I always thought that having someone come over and doing the laundry and the dishes would've been real nice!
They won't call you to come and help necessarily so you must insist to come over at a particular time and just do it. A nice massage ( if u can get a masseuse to come over)would be sumptious!

The two best gifts that we have received after having a baby have been : A gift card for a restaurant with a take-out menu (new moms don't have much time to cook) and a once-a-week cleaning service for about 4 weeks.
It's very sweet for you to be thinking of the new mom, and I am sure she will truly appreciate whatever you decide to give.

As a fairly new parent, the gift of time is invaluable. make or buy some premade meals that can be popped in the oven or microwave. purchase a gift card for a food delivery place she likes.
watch the baby so she can take a shower, maybe a maid.
As the father I got more sleep than my wife, but things like washing dishes were rough until we got a routine.

I like to give for the baby and the mother too.
for the mother: a comfy night set, a robe, a manicure set, A good book, bath stuff, A scrap book with a few things to go inside, and a camera if she doesn't already have one. things to do her hair or make up with
For the baby-
A diaper bag stuffed with baby essentials- onesies, diapers,
wipes, bottles, formula, pacifiers
A baby bath set - get a basket, fill it with lotions, body wash, powder, oil, wash clothes, and a hooded towel
A medicine kit - fill with Mylicon drops, diaper rash ointment, Oragel, Infant's Tylenol, a thermometer, a bulb syringe, saline drops, nail clippers
Other essentials (for me any way) are a baby sling like a Snuggli, recieving blankets, sleep and play outfits, soft toys especially ones with an unbreakable mirror, soothing music, soft lights.
Have fun shopping

How about a gift basket with a current chick DVD, a package of microwave popcorn, some nice cheese and expensive crackers and two candle holders and two candles, and certificate to babysit for a couple of hours and call it "dinner and a movie"
new moms are so absorbed by the baby, they need something just for them.

I gave birth 4 months ago via emergency c-section - the best present I recieved was gift certificates to shop online - groceries, diapers - anything - it was a relief to shop on my own time when the baby was sleeping.

A hard pregnancy and birth can be very tough on the body and mind. You can give her the gift of time. Give her a gift card to her favorite store and offer to baby sit while she goes shopping for herself. You could also give her the gift of YOUR time by cleaning her house, doing laundry, or running errands for her.
