Try making signs, that "if you are caught littering, they will be fined.Police take notice" You might have to talk to your police department about that, but in most areas, dumping, no matter where it is, is illegal.

Even if you dont own the area, Keep signs like Private property, or Keep out, posted near where the trash is being kept. Or ask your policedepartment if you can get a Residents only, Sign.

I think there's signs for No littering, No Dumping, ect, that state the town/state's laws, and prosicutions.

If you dont own, and you rent, just ask your landlord, to do the same.

Keeping a dog there could help. But you dont want a dog for that reason only, it's kinda cruel.

You can suggest a gate, that residents that need to go through that alley can have the key for. some apartment complexes do that.

Try a yahoo search and type "illegal dumping" and the city that you live in. There should be a number you can call to report the illegal dumping.

If it is a public street, alleyway, the city should arrange to have the dumped materials cleaned up. If there are properties in the zone, the city will advise the property owners of measures they can take which might reduce future dumping problems.

In the meantime, your best bet might probably be to post a sign and place a dumspster in the alley. Maybe you can also contact the city's waste collection department and tell them if they are able to clean up weekly when they pick up the household garbage.

There really isn't MUCH you can do about it. Sounds like the alley behind your house is not your property. The only thing you can do is continue to call the city and/or the police. If you see someone do it, get a license plate number, a description of what they look like, what they through there and any other important information you can get. Then give this info to the police. You might also ask them to put signs out warrning people who dump will be fined... Good Luck, I can't imagine what you are going through, PLUS if you have children, it could become a safety issue.

They are pigs, I would write down license numbers and call the cops , see if there is something in the trash that can connect the culprits to the trash, and take pictures/videos as they do it, You have to get aggressive and fight back. If there is any addresses connected to the trash you can use that against them, You will have to prosecute them , take them to court , but have evidence.

Try and cach them in the act. (photograph them dumping) then submit the photos to your local sanitation department there may be compensation in it for you. Try to get license plate #'s, faces, etc.
If this doesn't work #1 don't leave your garbage cans out in the area where they are dumping. #2 you could always (if your really desperate) open the trash and find their mail report it to the sanitation dept. and bring their trash to their front door see how they like it.

set up security cameras to catch whoever is trashing the alley. get multiple angles so if they pull up in a car to do the dumping then you can hopefully catch there license plate number. that way they get tracked down and fined for dumping junk in your trunk. i mean alley.

I asked my neighbor if he knew about a large metal frame left behind my privacy fence in the alley. The neighbor admitted to leaving the item. I asked him not to leave junk behind my house and he agreed. For months, nothing was left behind my house. Today, there it was--a crappy torn up wicker settee. Why is it behind my house and not his? I feel like the junker is passive aggressive and he's getting another visit from me. Not sure how to really resolve years of nuttiness!

People are real pigs. No dumping sign, could help. Cameras could help and a barking mean dog could help. Cameras are your best answer with the sign. If the dog becomes untied and the person is hurt, you will be held liable.

Put up a big sign saying "No Trash Zone"...and then put in small print, "If you are reading this, you are too close and have a shotgun pointed at you...so keep moving."
