Because you have a bunch of tv execs who want to put as much cash in their pockets as they can. So if one show becomes a hit, then that becomes the template to make similar shows to capitalize on the genre's popularity. That is why you see so many reality shows, especially the one's like American Idol. There goal is to bleed the genre dry, and move onto the next big thing.
Good shows are put into bad timeslots and do not receive the push that the reality shows get. The execs then say that the good show was a flop and cancel it.
From the success of the Osbournes, you now have shows with , Hulk Hogan, the Gottis, Gene Simmons, etc, etc. Everyone gets on the band wagon to make that buck.

It's simple. The TV networks are in the business to make money. They make money by selling advertising (commercials). The advertisers pay more per minute for shows that reach more people (as measured by the ratings), because they can make their sales pitch to a bigger audience. So the higher the ratings, the more money the network can make. Thus, when the ratings go down, they cancel the show (and try to replace it with another show that they think will get better ratings - and earn them more money).

Because not enough people watch the good shows. If they don't have high enough ratings (its all about the ratings) the show gets cancelled. Which is pretty sad really because a lot of shows are never given a chance to be great.

Because the good shows don't get the kind of ratings that the stupid shows do. I mean, come on, Bridezillas? What a stupid concept yet it is still on when the good shows usually don't last for more than a season or two.

Yes, it think it's a plot to dumb down the entire nation so we can all live in ignorant bliss. I definitely think TV has a lot to do with people's mental abilities. The brain is just like any other muscle, it needs exercise or it atrophies. You're not going to give your brain much of a workout watching Jerry Springer, to name just one airwave lunacy.

Perhaps becasue the majority of people watching them are of that calibre.
Or... perhaps there's a campain of 'stupidizing' (I know it's not a word... yet) the population springing from Hollywood... like anything else they try to shove down our throats.
Have you noticed how Hollywood is making politics??? Whatever sIssue arises on the political agenda they either have amovie about it, or a sitcom, or a documentary... How bizare! And we call that entertainment???

A lot of unpleasant behaviors (rudeness, snide remarks, mocking) are reinforced on TV, and many people think that it is "cool" to act in this manner.
Education is perceived as a waste of time, as these characters seem to get along nicely without it. So, the caliber of effort to make it is lessened.
