I have a lot of fondness for David Lean's masterpiece - its certainly in my top ten, and it was the greatest big-scale epic movie outside of the Lord of the Rings trilogy

That movie used the desert like a character in a way that no other movie used landscape - It wasn't afraid to take its time to tell a story - and it left images that no one ever forgot

And how the hell Peter O'Toole didn't win Best Actor for it is a huge mystery

It also says something that between Lawrence of Arabia and LOTR, very few directors even attempted epics on that scale - let alone succeed.
