Ireland had the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years back in the 19th century. It was based in Birr Castle and has now been reconstructed. The Steam Turbine was also invented by a member of this family (the Parsons Family)

In addition, an Irishman (John Holland) invented the first practical submarine.
