To stop incorrect use. And that's not just overdosing.
The biggest problem in fighting bacterial infections today is resistance to commonly used antibiotics, especially in hospital-acquired infections. Doctors have already distributed too many antibiotics for the wrong reasons which has led to high prevalence of antibiotic resistance which means that the drugs are no longer effective. "Super-bugs" like MRSA (methicillin/multi-resistant S. aureus) and VRE (vancomycin-resistant Enterococci) have been generated by powerful antibiotics being used unecessarily when others could have been used to treat the same infection. Now these bugs have limited therapeautic options left and some have mutated further so we really have nothing else to use against them.
Un-authorised distribution of antibiotics can be disastrous and since the doctors can't always get it right, making them available for the public to decide what to use would be disastrous.
Allergies are a big problem for the one person who takes the wrong medication which is a good reason to not sell them over the counter in the first place, but the other is to prevent more wide-spread problems.
Despite what it may seem, it is not a deliberate money-making scheme. It is a necessary protection for the consumers, the manufacturers and the general public.

LOL Please. They sell guns in massive amounts. So spare me that this has anything to do with using something proper, or improper. Call it for what it truly is, and that is that the majority of visits a year to the docs office, are for the VERY SAME reasons usually. They wouldn't collect all that cash if you could just go and get the antibiotics that they give repeatedly. Think about what it takes to get an antibiotic given for something as simple as a common ear infection which usually is a prescription of Amoxicillin. Everyone needs to make their cut, and that is the BOTTOMLINE, whether you want to try to keep living under that rock, or not. Fact is that if healthcare was truly about health. It would be affordable, reasonable, and doctors would care more about human beings, then being loaded. It's all a simple solution, want to know what truly matters?? Don't pay a politician, and there wouldn't be any. Let doctors earn the same wages that families who need medical attention, but can't have because they don't make enough to afford it. Or can't afford ridiculous insurance costs. Find out just how many will still become doctors. Fact is, this whole nation is 1 corrupt cesspool, and all you nuts that think that taking your own antibiotics is going to lead to some ****** up hollywood pandemic, zombie world. Hate to break it to you, but the odds actually favor you dying by gunfire as being a lot more probable. There are someplaces on this globe that you can get over the counter antibiotics, and guess what???? They don't have any super diseases. LOL 1 day you'll realize where most diseases get there start. A lab, and you clowns are the guinea pigs.

No. misuse of antibiotics creates strains of bacteria that are not affected by the antibiotics. This is a very dangerous thing to happen. People generally don't understand antibiotics. I have a friend who is a doctor and people will demand prescriptions of antibiotics for viruses and anything else. Antibiotics only kill bacteria. They are only good for bacterial infections such as UTI's, chest infections and infected wounds. They should not be sold over the counter.

That's the thing!! If they sold antibiotics over the counter the doctors will loose all the insurance money that people pay for co-pays. It is a sick world indeed. But since I have been on Juice Plus+ , I have not had to take any medications for the last two and that goes for my kids too!! It's an all natural fruits and vegetables formed into a capsule. It is wonderful!!!

If people take too many antibiotics then the bacteria will eventually get used to them and become immune. So the antibiotics we have now will be ineffective and super germs will develop that we can't stop. So we don't need every random fool taking them just for a cold. A doctor decides if you really need them, then gives you a prescription.

Just like Mitch said. Every drug, chemical, or material will typically come with directions on proper usage. The user will always be the one to either follow the directions or not, even if you have a prescription. You can have medical records of what you were prescribed before and have the same symptoms but the additional doctor's fee is the only way to get the medicine you NEED!

Lisa P had it right. But you need to know about "unintended consequenses". That's where you think you're treating one problem and something you don't even know about gets way worse.
Cheers
