An excellent book is "Setting Tile" by Micheal Byrne. Start with the basics, laying a small room with 12" tile. Get high quality thin set mortar, TEC is one of the best. Remember prep work is very important. Don't get cheap on the underlayment (Hardibacker or Concrete Board) Lay the underlayment correctly. Tools you will need:
!/4" square notch trowel, for 6-12" cermanic tile. The size of the notch depends on the size of the tile.
mixer and high torque 1/2" drill
5 or 6 clean buckets.
basic hand tools, hammer, tape, caulk line, straight edge, framing square
depending on underlayment, circular saw or angle grinder w/ diamond blade.
wet saw, you can rent one for about $40/ day.
snap cutter, you can use the wet saw for all the cuts, the snap cutter helps speed things up.
grout float
4-5 sponges
margin trowel.
spacers, I don't use them on floors, only walls, but the inexperienced setter go ahead and use them.

If you have a friend that has successfully set tile before, have them help you the first time. Like most other things, the first time is difficult, but after you learn it is really easy.

Good Luck, if you have any specific questions once you get into it, email me.

You can try and catch a clinic at a Lowes or Home Depot. But it really isn't hard at all.

Tools:

Bucket and mixer to mix grout and mortar.
Trowel
Grout Float
Tile cutter, tile nippers, etc
Countour Gauge if you need to cut tiles to the shape of something along the floor.

Both Home Depot and Lowe's have on-site classes all the time. Check their schedules usually located at the entrance.
