What is the easiest way to use the wheel on an iPod?

I bought an iPod for my husband for his birthday, and I have been trying to practice using it and the wheel seems impossible!

There isn't a right way and a wrong way or an easy way and a hard way. The middle button is to advance a stage and the Menu button is to go back a stage. The click wheel is to scroll up and down. You should have the hang of it in no time, keep practising
