this is often told as tale of someone being repaid and asking for a grain of rice on each square of a chessboard and doubled every day. It's an old folk tale, but a good one!
1 the first day, 2 the second, 4 the third, 8 the fourth, 16 the fifth, 32 the sixth, 64 the 7th, 128 the 9th, 256 the 10th, 512 the 11th, 10024 the 12th, 20048 the 13th, 40096 the 14th, 80192 the 15th, 160384 the 16th... there's a math formula for this which I have forgotten, however you can see that the number is going up steeply by doubling, and on day 16 you are getting over 3 thousand dollars for that day alone. If you double 3 you have 6, double 6, 12, and double 12 you have 24, and double 24, you have 48. So, on the 24th day you are almost at 100, 000 for that day alone, but you double that the next day, for 200, 000 and double that the next day for 400, 000, and the next 800, 000, and the next you have over a million! So on the 29th and the 30th, you are getting millions of dollars!
