Nixon considered using nukes in Vietnam Tue Aug 1, 6:38 AM.

WASHINGTON - President Nixon, in his first year in office and eager to end an unpopular war that killed tens of thousands of U.S. troops, considered using nuclear weapons against the North Vietnamese, recently declassified documents show.

By mid-1969, Nixon and national security adviser Henry Kissinger had settled on a strategy. Kill millions in the name of the Republican party and say it was the good of the USA. However, China stated they would destroy the United States so Nixon backed off.

I have travelled and lived in other parts of the world and have educated myself in World and American ploitics out of human intrest.

For a long time I have considered myself a Republican because of my beliefs on abortion and old fashioned family values. However in our ever changing world I feel Republicans our using religion , ethics and family values as a way to gain power to fund Wars and business deals.

Since there only 2 major political parties that our votes have any chance at I would be more inclined to choose a conservative democrat.

Its time we care about the the welfare of the American people , helping other nations who need us in crisis and building our relations with the rest of the world.

It seems the U.S is guilty of Nation building in the eyes of the entire world. Yes the entire world. We were onec a great Nation with respect now , How can I defend our nation when I am abroad and others say Nagative things about my country.
I used to fight fiersly. Now there is no excuses left for us !!!!!

No, not the Republican way. However the US used nucs as a means to end fighting with Japan, under Pres Truman, a Democrat. Truman thought about it, was advised not to, then did it twice. Killing in the name of the United States of American.

All Americans have to live with that history. Democrats have a way of forgetting that they have gotten the US into more Wars/conflicts, than Republicans. You don't have to wait for that info to be declassified...

It think it is funny how non-Republicans never remember that a Democrat was in office when the war started. And many presidents have considered using nuclear weapons, they were viewed as an option for many many years. I feel that you should title your question "Am I ignorant?", just because you read a newly published article does not mean that you understand what was going on at that time. Here is a thought....think then speak!

In the name of "shock and awe" certain Republicans, including many who are now in power in Washington, would like to use overwhelming force. Unfortunately, as we are discovering, such overwhelming force is messy and gives rise to lots of collateral damage.

And communications have moved on since Vietnam days: mobile phones and the Internet mean that outrage and reprisal, and not shock and awe, are the likely result. Especially within cultures where martyrdom is welcomed and used as a political weapon.

There are those among the Religious Right who, wanting to rush the Armageddon and the Rapture, would like to see nuclear weapons used. For now, such persons are not in control, although this could change.

He considered using them. Did you not get the word considered ?

Nixon and the repubican party did not get us in Vietnam. JFK and the Dems did. LBJ made the mess and Nixon got us out the best any one could. That is the facts.

Must be, but you can't blame Nixon since Truman was so successful in using it to end the war with Japan. So I guess it's the democrat way.

Who was that President who commissioned the building of the first atomic weapon? That's right, F.D.R. To which political party did he belong? That's right, Democrats. Now, who dropped that first atomic weapon? That's right, Truman. To which political party did he belong? That's right again, Democrats. How many other atomic weapons have been dropped on anyone? I think history has shown that the answer to this ridiculous question is emphatically NO!!

That's just the beginning of the kind of crap that is pulled under the banner of "defending our country" and "being a patriot" and now we're doing the same thing in Iraq. As if we were somehow being patriotic by all of the death and destructiona and violence and blood and chaos all in the name of "Freedom" people, we need to wake up and speak out against the madness
