I've tired once and the piece that was cut off died and so did the plant I cut it from.

Lucky Bamboo is not truly bamboo -- see the link below for an explanation of what it really is and how to prune it so it survives. Good "luck" for the next time!!

I don't think you're supposed prune bamboo, unless it's already turning brown.
