if it was cause of her period...she'd only need to take some midol. that would get rid of everything. tylenol, advil...those medicines usualy dont work well.

I would just like to say that during a period women can become more emotional or anxious and if she has only been in the job a fortnight sounds like bad timing.
I also understand your viewpoint as the company needs her at that time, perhaps it could be mentioned by someone unofficially. If she suffers this monthly at all she should seek treatment as no-one should be slave to their hormones.
It could be more to do with just the stress of starting a new job so a little understanding would be good but, do give her the heads up that her absence was not good timing. That gives her the chance to prove shes reliable without official action being taken and blotting her probationary period. Not giving her the opportunity to do something positive about it could also make you look like you have a beef with this co-worker or an axe to grind because miscalling someone can backfire.

She needs to be fired, that's the worst excuse I've ever heard. She's just lazy. Millions of women work a full day all over the world while they're suffering from cramps and headaches, - you take some medication and you deal with it. Some women use 'female problems' as an excuse because no one wants to 'question' things like that. Ridiculous. Totally unfair on you....if I were you I'd buy her a bottle of MIDOL and put it on her desk :) No excuses next month!

Yes. Menstrual pain is the worse, especially for the first few days. You can experience all that your co-worker described, sometimes not even a Tylenol helps and if it does it only last about an hour. I think it was best she called in. I had such bad cramps the other day, Couldn't even think or see straight, my whole body was on fire and all I could do was bend over crouched on the floor moaning. Men will never understand!

She's obviously not commited to her job, if she called in at monthend. Even if she is sick, she should at least come into work and make an effort. She can let the supervisor know that she isn't feeling well and probably leave early. Or, she could come in late(r).
Periods can be bad, but it doesn't last ALL day.
How do you know she was having her period? If you all are that friendly in your office, then you should let her know that you feel she isn't a dependable member of the team. And, that you all are disappointed. Did she apologize to anyone?

Difficult one to call. I have killer periods some months that leave me crippled with pain and other months I'm fine. However, it is the oldest excuse in the book if you want time off, most men are too panick stricken to question further. I would suggest that you tell her you will leave it this time, but if it does happen again you need a doctors letter. If she's faking that will put a stop to it and if she's genuine she will have no problem in providing one.

No, probably just the only excuse she could think of. Usually when you are in your probationary period, you should not call out. Also, the first two weeks of work is sort of fun.... she will probably be a problem employee for you.

I have been in management for 20 years now and alot of the women that work for me try to take time off every month for the same reason It is not an excuse not to work and she shouldn't get away with it because it will just continue every month.

yeah I mean, Im not innocent in the "calling into work thing" But I can tell you I have never used that excuse because it is super lame. Very very very often all you need is some tylenol. Tell her she needs to find some better lines.

definitely make her bring a doctor's note, because she's lying. Menstrual periods do not cause fevers, and as a woman, she should already know that. Maybe she didn't know that you have the availability of a million women at your fingertips, ay!

I have bad cramps every month with mine, but never never in all my life had to call off work for that. I take motrin or tylenol and suck it up. She may be drunk/faking. Taking advantage because your a man and don't know. I agree with everyone else. Ask for a note.
