Y!A charges 5 points for each question that you ask. The purpose in charging you is to motivate you to ask good questions. If asking questions were free, Y!A would be riddled with even more senseless questions than it already has.

If you select a Best Answer to your question, Y!A gives you 3 points back. The goal here is to motivate you to read the answers and select the one that's best. This rewards the person who answered with 10 points, and motivates them to give more and better answers in the future.

Check out http://answers.yahoo.com/info/scoring_system.php for a detailed explanation of how the points system works.

Yep, that's right. Everytime you ask a question, you get 5 points deducted. You will get 3 pts back when you pick a best answer. Also, answering a question will give you 2 pts, and you get 1 point (I think, could be 2) for voting on a question that was not resolved. Sorry, Hope this wasn't too confusing. Look up the answers site to get more info.

Because that is how this whole thing works. You get docked five points every time you ask a question. If you want to earn more points stop asking and start answering!!!! You get two points for each question you answer and if your answer gets picked as the best one you get 10 additional points. Good luck!

That is Yahoo's way of charging you...

But if you chose a best answer.. you get 3 points...so really a question only cost you 2 points

Because they want you to answer then to ask but, if we do not ask, no one will answer. So, losing 5 points sucks and it makes no sense to me at all!

Everyone loses 5 for asking. I'm not sure why though.

Probably because you're not helping anyone. They're helping you. That's why I keep my questions to a maximum of 5 a month.
