Are you talking your hard disk or a CD? If there is a problem with the CD, you can't really fix it. You can take it in and get repairs do to scratches.
If you talking hard disk, click start, my computer, right click c drive, properties, tools tab, error disk checking, check both, click okay, restart the computer. Scan will take 45 minutes - two hours.

Detecting and repairing disk errors
You can use the Error-checking tool to check for file system errors and bad sectors on your hard disk.
Open My Computer, and then select the local disk you want to check.
On the File menu, click Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box. and also automatically fix file system for errors
Notes
To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
All files must be closed for this process to run. If the volume is currently in use, a message box will appear prompting you to indicate whether or not you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time you restart your system. Then, the next time you restart your system, disk checking will run. Your volume will not be available to perform other tasks while this process is running.
If your volume is formatted as NTFS, Windows automatically logs all file transactions, replaces bad clusters, and stores copies of key information for all files on the NTFS volume.
Or if you want a tree party program search for tune up utility 2006 or Norton Utilities

Norton Utilities has what they call a disk doctor. It's a very good program. It scans your entire computer and if it finds errors it will ask if you want them repaired. It will repair the ones that are repairable.

Depending on The severity of the damage on the disk there might be various errors u might be facing the most common of them is getting blue screen errors sometimes , if that is the case the above solutions might sometime crash cos they run within the window environment.
There is this alternative
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx
U'll need to boot from a winXP ( i assume that;s wht u have) and login to the console .
You can boot to the XP CD and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes and hit enter
Then type "exit" and hit enter
