Many wheels used to be made out of magnesium alloy, much alike to aluminum alloy.

Because they are made from Magnesium Alloy,hence the abbreviation Mag Wheels

They were originally made from magnesium alloy. "Mags" is now used to describe other custom wheels, but only the wheels with the lightweight magnesium alloy are actually mags.

Mags were the early version of Aluminum Magnesium Slotted Rims (Mags) available on the aftermarket.

Racing wheels were made of magnesium. they switched to aluminum because of cost and strength. still called them mags
