Any strong pain medication like an epidurals can be bad for labor, especially when there is no urgent need for such strong pain medication. Epidurals tend to make labor more sluggish and this can drag things out. Your baby might be born sleepier and/or sluggish and have trouble nursing. My son did and it led to latch on problems and set me up for a terrible breast infection. I also itched like crazy afterwards from the epidural. You can also get a massive headache and also nausea/vomiting from the epidural.

The less medication a woman has the more "in tune" she is with her labor contractions and is able to push more effectively. The pain of childbirth is there for a reason. It keeps you alert and focus and lets you know when contractions are coming. And every contraction brings you closer to meeting your baby.

So the epidural can negatively effect everybody and everything concerned. It's pretty darn expensive, too (a luxury not a necessity) and should only be used when a woman's pain is so great that it is actually hampering labor more than medication would.

Women have come a long way, baby, but they still won't give up uneccesary and potentially harmful drugs during labor. Haven't we all learned by now that labor is a natural, normal process and your body knows what to do?

Women before us had the strength to get through the pain and we can, too. Not every medical advance should be viewed as progress.

Having an epidural is the only way to go! I just had my 5th baby 8 months ago and they are all fine. I did have a little reaction to 2 of the epidurals...just a little vomiting, but it is worth it. I also once experienced the epidural wearing off too soon -- NOT FUN! Go for the epidural. When you ask for it they will make you sign papers that you accept the risks involved with YOU, not your baby. It will be fine.

I have heard that keeping crackers by your bed and eating a little something before you get up will help. Good luck!!!!

There are as many opinions on epidurals as there are people. Research it and discuss with your OB what is the right course for you.

As far as the morning sickness goes, I think you have all of our sympathies. I found that anything with GINGER helped. My favorite were the little Ginger chewy candies from Trader Joe's (in a Green bag). Ginger snaps, ginger ale and ginger beer (which is a soft drink) helped. If I didn't have anything with ginger near by, soda crackers, and cold water helped.

Good luck. :)

No - Eipdural is not bad for the baby. You won't feel labor (which is the worst part of having a baby). You'll be sorry if you chose NOT to have one.
Morning sickness --- try toast with peanut butter and eat it slowly. Have crackers at your bedside and eat some BEFORE you get up and start walking around for the day.

epidural does not harm the baby

keep saltine crackers by your bed. When you wake up in the morning, start munching on them to get rid of the queasy-ness.

Any drugs they give you during labor can bring harm to your baby, or increase the risk of c-section.
You will also notice your baby will be born with blotchy, weird looking skin if you have drugs, but this will clear up.

I suggest you take the (usually free) birthing classes offered by your hospital, especially if this is your first child. They can be very helpful in explaining all of your options and etc to you.

I had natural birth with my daughter, recovery is much worse then the labor.
