A good research topic is asking yourself a question that you've always wondered about. Try to narrow your question down to a specific, resarchable topic, usually one you think you might have a generalized answer to, but not a detailed positive one you can back up with sources and facts. Make your hypothesis, research, report your findings and conclusions and cite your resources. For example, why is there spousal abuse...narrowed down: why do women stay with an abusive husband? Hypothesis? Because they are scared to leave. Research, Report, add bits of your own conclusions to portray your own journey of discovery when reporting the subject (to support or even argue the point)... & Cite your Sources. Voila! That makes a GREAT research paper!

Since you mentioned research paper, I assume you mean a library-type research topic rather than an experimental or theoretical one.

If original research, then I suggest a topic that does not show up when you do a google scholar search. This means it is new and a good PhD topic, that requires years of original research.

If a report topic, then select a topic that returns lots of papers since a research report is a summary of the published papers, anyway.

So, not knowing which you need, you decide.

depends on what the research paper is for. you find something you're interested and start researching it. papers can develop from that alone. if it's a thesis type thing it should be based off research and will be more involved

Find a topic that is interesting to you, and make sure you do enough research to make it interesting to whomever reads it.
