Cook County has a great Master Gardener program. Call the U of I extension service and ask to speak with a Master Gardener. They are experts for your area and they will tell you all you need to know.

Could be that a colony of wood boring bees has moved into the neighborhood and finds your tree tasty. It's not anything to worry about unless the tree starts fading.

It could be woodpeckers looking for bugs. Bugs themselves like termites or wood boring beetles or bees. I would consult with an exterminator or a tree specialist.
