I would suggest a bird, a small one. Maybe a parakeet, or a cockatiel. They are both inexpensive and easy to find.

As a small pet I would suggest a rat.
They don't bite like many hamsters do (in fact I've never heard of one biting a human), they're very smart (some have been trained to use a litterbox and perform little stunts), they're low maintenance (similar to a hamster, although it depends a little bit on where you get it from, feeder rats are probably cheapest and can make good pets but they won't be the ones tamed from the beginning like a rat from a rattery), they're quiet (females often like to run on wheels but males usually do not), and in my experience they have always been more affectionate and responsive then a hamster.
I'm not really sure what your family considers small, but there are several that are similar in size and care to a hamster. If rats aren't for you, you could try a gerbil (very active, fun to make their habitats and watch them play), a mouse (smaller then a rat, but maybe not quite as people friendly), a degu (about the size of a rat, very social and active), or if your family would allow you to go a little bigger I recommend maybe a ferret (loads of fun, playful), a guinea pig (a little bit more cuddly then a ferret, make funny noises lol), or a rabbit (quiet, clean, and can be rather cuddly).
I too, have had lots of pets in my lifetime and thats my little summary for you, although other people might disagree.
I suggest you do more research so you can find the pet that you really want.

Online, you can try
http://exoticpets.about.com - It has lots of links and descriptions of different pets. As well as many that I haven't mentioned including sugar gliders, hedgehogs, flying squirrels, and less conventional pets.

http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/breeds/small-animal-breeds.htm - this site gives some more descriptions on small pets and their different breeds.

http://www.centralpets.com/pages/mammals/mammals.html - this site doesn't have a ton of information on specific pets but it has a big variety of species and pictures too.

I hope you find what you're looking for!

does the animal have to remain in a cage? I would probably say another cat since cats are really neat when the play together. Cats do well around other cats and since you already have the stuff you need to take car of the cat then it will be less work for you. if you are looking for a companion then i would say dog because that way you can have fun. If you want something really interesting then a ferret is a cool animal

mabey another fish or a hampster but hamsters make alot of nosie at night and can bite.chinchilias are good becase most dont bite and i think they sleep during the night so they wouldnt keep you up with a ton of nosie. but they need alot of room you could resherch a pet you think would be cool or go to a pet store they could help you find one that would be good for your life style.

for example a bird might not be to good because they can be nosiey, expensive, they may bite, and all birds make A BIG MESS every time they eat.

so i think if you go to a petstore and mabey read they little signs by the cages that tell you about the animal or talked to some one that works there it would be best.

Ferrets are fun. You have to have the time to take care of them, though. They need a bath every other day or they smell bad. If you're playing with them outside of their cage, you have to block off small openings, because they can squeeze through anything. I had to get one out of the very inside of the sofa once because it got between the cushions and went all the way in!

I suggest that you get a parakeet. They are very inexpensive. They are also small birds. They are cute and friendly. they can even be taught how to talk. I have a lot of experience with parakeets, I believe they are just the right pet for you. I have 4 parakeets myself. Hope my advice helped.

Do you like birds? How about a horse, haha except they aren't really small. Hamsters are okay, not really exciting though, i've had one before, he bit me lots. Um... besides that I cant really think of any small pets..
