My cousin works as a driver for a transport firm. His boss is rather petty, demanding him to pay for fuel if his mileage exceeds a certain distance.
He wants to know how to slowdown the odometer, so the distance travelled can be reduced slightly. I suggested a magnet as his is an analog version in a Japanese truck (I think Toyota), but I haven't a clue about trucks.

No attempt to sell the vehicle will be made, he will continue to drive until it 'konks out'.

1. The external hub odometer works by rotating on the rear axle hub thus clocking miles. In order to stop rotation connect a chain from the odometer to the truck body, by doing this the odometer becomes stationary, thus preventing rotation, thus eliminating miles from being clocked.

This is a very simple solution that does not require changing of tires or any other mechanical system. centrifical

This is easy. Drive it and pay for the fuel. It's cheaper than owning a vehicle. There is no easy way with it being analog. it is seriously labor intensive to roll back/change the speedometer. PLUS IT'S ILLEGAL, PLUS IT'LL GET HIM FIRED IF HE'S CAUGHT.

If the boss only wants him to pay for fuel(not so much a mile) then he should:
1. give the boss cash(figure out how many miles you put on it and divide by the MPG and multiply by the cost per gallon.
2. KEEP A RECORD OF HOW MUCH AND WHEN HE PAYS THE BOSS(BEST TO DO IN A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK) THIS INCLUDES: DATE AND TIME; SPECIFICALLY WHERE(IN OFFICE/BREAKROOM, ETC) AND ANY OTHER DETAILS OF THE EVENT.
3. this way it lends credence to his having given money to the boss. If the boss is the owner then it's not quite so important, but he still needs to do it.
4. This was the boss will:
still get to write off the expense of the mileage and fuel
and get the money to do whatever with

This isnt awnsering your question but for the so called enginering grad....how do you put a chain on a odometer? It runs off the speedo which plugs into the transmission.......thats the worst thing I have heard next to a "Max Wedge Hemi"

Since truck drivers get paid by the mile, this makes no sense what so ever.
There is such a demand for truck drivers now, why doesn't your cousin piss on his boss desk, telling him 'I quit' and get a job somewhere else?

illegal even if not selling it

but,

you can buy bigger rims and tires. the distance traveled is greater per rotation. it is miniscule if you measure a few rotations but it adds up.

buy a programer and tell it has smaller rims and tires than it actually has. the programmer will recalculate and reset the computer monitoring mileage.

change the tire size or gear ratio size. you can also swap out the speedo gear for a different size.

I think it's illegal to do what your friend wants to do.
