I just got a 1989 Mercury Cougar bostonian edition, and the air conditioning has stopped cooling. It needs a coolant refill ( r12) but apparentely you have to switch over to a new type of coolant (r134a). Does anyone know how much coolant it takes to refill, and if I have to switch over to the new coolant, a good conversion kit that is easy to use. Thanks.

THIS IS OVER YOUR HEAD!!! If you're not a mechanic. To switch from r12 to 134 requires that you change the seals and completely flush the system. Not for the faint of heart.

Better idea:
There is an r12 substitute on the market that does not require you to have an r12 certification to purchase. Since I've not used it I don't know, exactly, all the deatils. When I was on hold when calling NAPA auto parts they played a commercial about this freon. Supposed to be cheaper than r12(well, everythings cheaper than r12), and can be used right along with the r12 that's in the system.

You might want to put some dye into the cooling system. If there's a leak this can be detected by wearing special glasses. You willnot have the special glasses, but it there is a leak it will probably beed to be repaired by an a/c mechanic anyway. If you can show him where the leak is it should cost you less for diagnostics and repair.
