Pure snobbery, plus some people will find any excuse to try and be-little someone else, by thinking they have a superior job it makes them feel superior, even if they are mis-guided somewhat. Hell if I earned enough and was happy doing it, I would do anything.

Ignorance and pride. Any job which is necessary should gain some level of respect, whether it's the sanitation worker or the surgeon. Jobs that may not seem as necessary may inspire the mind or enhance the human spirit, such as an actor or a minister.
However, some jobs require more skills than others. It doesn't take much to learn to work at McDonald's. I imagine that, although some people are great at cleaning, that anyone could learn to be a hotel maid. However, to be a cop, or to be a physician, or to be a good kindergarten teacher, requires skills that not everyone has, be those skills physical, mental, or emotional. Jobs that require a "knack" or that require specialized skills will get more respect than jobs that just anyone can do.
That said, anyone who does a good job, no matter what that job is, deserves respect. You want a good operation, but you also want a clean floor and a good hamburger.
Martin Luther King once said, "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted or as Beethoven composed music. He should sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will pause and say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well."

Unfortunately it is human nature that we always want someone to be worst off than we are and so we tend to categorize people and put them in a "box". It is stupid really because we are cheating ourselves in getting to know people that may contribute a lot to a good friendship. After all, should true friendship be based on money?

I'm guilty on this one- I look down on bankers, politicians, 'executives' and all types of people who have jobs like that...... I do so because they tend to be far up their own backsides, like it there, and think they are relevant.

i work for McDonald's, and lots of people look down on my job. i think they shouldn't judge unless they have actually done the job themselves, only then does it give them a right to judge. after all its all money, it doesn't matter whivh job you do

Because they probably never had to scramble to make a living. Any job that pays your bills is a good job, whatever it is.
