A cost accountant usually analyzes the cost of something to how much it can be sold for. A tax accountant does taxes, and an accountant does just about everything to do with accounting, including cost and tax.

Yikes...okay we sit around and do absolutly nothing. Kidding...okay cost accountants would probably be best described as a managerial accountant. They keep track of the business transactions on a day-to-day basis and evaluate where the company can grow and where their resources are going. Tax accountants specialize in taxes. They prepare Individual, Partnership, S-Corp, and Corpoation tax returns on a yearly basis. They may also be involved with payroll tax issues and help businesses in this matter. An accountant would do the books for the business, reconcile bank statements, and prepare financial statements such as Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Retained Earnings. To throw an extra one at you, an audit accountant is a little more one to one active in that they may go to your business and test things such as making sure invoices are being paid correctly and to real vendors, verifying balances on accounts, etc.

My husband is a cost accountant for a manufacturing company. He does all kinds of figuring for them. He figures up how much it costs the company to make each particular part - including man hours, and cost of parts. He also keeps up with what the costs are if something goes wrong - like how much it costs them if the power is out for a while and people are standing around waiting for it to be fixed. He helps them to figure out ways to lower their costs. I'm sure he would do a much better job explaining this, but hopefully this helps.

They look at numbers all day... they know how much you make but you never know how much they make, so because of that they feel like they have some kind of super power over you. They go hand in hand with "the boss" and everyone else is sooo small compared to them...
