Fish have VERY short memories, but they can learn and remember things related to food. They can learn to come to the top to be fed when you tap the tank. Fish like salmon can remember where they were hatched and return there to spawn - but it's hard to tell how much is memory and how much is hard-wired instinctive behavior.
Cats have excellent memories, especially when it comes to things they DON'T like. If something bad happens, like a trip to the vet - they can remember it forever. They are also excellent at finding their way home (assuming they are outdoor cats).

Its a common MISCONCEPTION that Goldfish only have a 3 second memory!! Studies have found the concept of fish having three second memories is a myth and goldfish memories can last as long as three months. People, you need to do your homework!
Cats, like people, have short-term and long-term memory functions. Having short and long term memory is the reason cats can remember where the litter box is when it has just been moved it (short-term memory) but can also remember things learned years before, like what the litter box is for (long-term memory).

the 2 second fish memory is an urban legend. It actually varies by fish. I think a cat must have a decent memory because they can be trained to some extent, at least to the point of reconizing their name, what not to climb on, and how always to find their way back to the house.

Pretty hard to say with a fish, but I can tell you a cat can remember for at least one year. I have a cat, named mrpurrfect you might guess that does not really like strangers.
When a new person comes over, or anyone he does not know he hides under the couch and comes out when they leave.
Last week, an old friend of mine that lived her for a while and got to know my cat came by and mrpurrfect at first went under the couch but within 2 minutes he was rubbing on my friends leg and then tried to sharpen his claws on my friends jeans, something he has never done with anyone else.
So cats do remember, at least one year.

A fish is a matter of seconds...a cat on the other hand just depends on how mad you've made it!
They do NOT forget if they feel slighted, and they WILL take however long it takes to pay you back.
Years ago, my dad smacked his Siamese for something, and that night when he went to bed, his beloved cat had peed on his pillow...they remember, trust me!

no longer all of those are genuine. i'm uncertain approximately all of them, yet i'm going to element out those i'm specific are fake. Mythbusters, that's notoriously unscientific, time-honored the skill to "prepare" goldfish, implying their reminiscence means is larger than 3 seconds. Sharks' eyelids are fastened so that they are able to't blink in line with se, yet they do very own what's talked approximately as a nictating membrane to guard the eyes while feeding. Kneecaps advance at an identical time as interior the womb. whether February 1865 is the only month to no longer have an entire moon (which I doubt) this is truly in basic terms a remember of threat as to while this is going to happen back. New animals maximum actual have been domesticated, however possibly no longer interior the varieties you may think of. We in many cases think of in terms of huge issues like cows, yet in modern-day times we've created bomb-sniffing bees, plump salmon for fisheries, and probably an mind-blowing form of alternative issues which do no longer at present come to my ideas. in addition to, we've domesticated an entire host of recent plant life in merely the final century. The QE2's gasoline intake in all probability relies upon on what she's doing on the 2nd, merely interior an identical way your motor vehicle makes use of greater gasoline once you're accelerating. interior the middle of a cruise with all her momentum, I doubt this determine. however Niagra Falls has frozen sturdy, it became in 1848, no longer 1932. that's to no longer say it did no longer (and does not) get especially icy. females and adult males blink at an conventional of 10 cases a minutes. No distinction there. desire that facilitates.

I can only speak from personal experience, my fish have a decent memory, and they can recognize certain people. They know who feeds them and who doesn't. And remember where their favorite plant is to uproot. But this also varies from species to species. Cichlids have an awesome memory.
Cats can remember forever if you make them mad enough, or happy enough. They can hold grudges for YEARS.
