Easy - They are a status symbol

2006-08-01 07:49:24 · answer #1 · answered by jack 5 · 0 0

The don't take up that much road space - they just look like they do because they're taller and squarer. A new Discovery is about the same length and width as a Mondeo, but no-one complains about Mondeos using too much road space.

All cars pollute. Smaller 4x4s with 2.0-litre diesel engines pollute maybe 5% more than a Mondeo-sized car with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Again, when did you last here anyone complaining about pollution from Mondeos.

Its partly a fashion thing - in the 1980s everyone wanted hot-hatches, even though they used more fuel than the lower-powered versions, had a less comfortable ride and cost more to buy / fuel / insure - and partly a practicality thing - a 4x4 feels roomier than a car of the same length / width, copes better with speed humps, potholes, etc. and is easier to fit the kids' bicycles into.

I think anyone who wants a 4 x 4 is daft, unless they live in the country and will actually use the 4x4 features. I saw a programme on TV a few weeks ago about someone wanting to buy one, they wanted a Range Rover, for the 'Wow' factor, quite honestly we found this so very amusing to the point of missing a lot of the programme through laughing! Wow factor, what a load of ruibbish, they are ten a penny so called status symbols and used by people who simply havent got a clue and have no respect for their environment. Anyone wanting a 4x4 should be checked out, to see if they are urban dwellers first, if not, they can;t have one, they are stupid vehicles for just taking kids to school in! There is no 'wow' factor with these, £50k is a lot of dosh for one and would be better spent on far better vehicles, kinder to the environment and that will turn heads. How many 4x4 drivers actually know how to use the features?

Do your research before spouting such utter rubbish!!

One - not everybody wants a 4x4.

Two - a 'Toyota Rav4' or even an 'Isuzu Trooper' is SMALLER than my saloon car. (Length & Width)

Three - if you despise modern 4x4's then go hug a tree. A ten year old ford fiesta 1.1 will emit MUCH more harmful fumes than a new 3.0 litre Landrover. Get rid of all the OLD crap on the roads.

Example: When in Perth last year the 'greenies' were vandalising (stickering) EVERY 4x4 they saw, including a Suzuki Vitara with a 1.6 engine - yet left a 4.8 V8 Jag on one side of it and my 2.5 V6 on the other.... they also arrived in a beat-up minibus (diesel).
I HATE those sanctamonious, preachy, brainwashed morons that do NO research, NO thought, haven't a CLUE about emmisions of modern engines v's old ones - but try to influence ME - a guy with KNOWLEDGE of legislation, emmisions control, vehicle management etc.

Don't believe the propaganda you're fed by the media & 'concerned' groups. They have their OWN agenda - do some research, CHECK the emissions records (most large companies will provide output levels) - be a thinker not a sheep.

They dont pollute as much as you think. a modern range rover chucks out less than a ferrari so go pick on the posh boys you lentil eating, 2cv driving lesbian tree hugger. I drive a Lamborghini and a 4x4 because I live in the country and have the sports car for pulling fanny and the 4x4 for running over rabbit hugging lesbians in 2cv's

It all depends on the lifestyle you lead.

Ignoring the fact that they're strong and (usually) much safer than a normal car, they also can go offroad for people who dont just drive around the towns or main roads. The large amounts of room inside them also make them ideal for people who do sports and activites requiring bulky equipment, such as golf (as in play every other day , represent your club in the A Team golf), or camping, which in a smaller car would require lowering/removing seats and not being able to give anyone a lift.

So, I can scare little Toyota Hybrid Prius's (USA Economy Killers) with my big HUMMER H2. Also, we HUMMER drivers like to go to the ends of the Earth, reach every mountain top by seeing only the sky out the front windshield, explore God's beautiful forrests, brave the deep sands of the deserts, and being able to drive through water so deep that you can reach out the windows and touch the water. That is why real men and sexy women drive 4x4's.

I'll have you know, I have no desire to own a 4X4. I have plenty of Hot Rods to pollute with. However, My High powered, go fast Hot Rods put out less pollution than your new gutless, high end go-cart.

They're great when it's icey and snowy out. Or when you friend is moving and needs an extra hand. Or when your dog went swimming at the neighbors pond and needs a ride home. Or when it's super windy.
