I think its more about a strong beautiful woman. Also most Queens love them, so they may wish they were more like them. Its like Xena and Buffy, many straight girls loved them because they wanted to be that powerful and independent. Straight guys love them cuz... well chicks with weapons and what-not are hot.

Gays love diva's. I don't think Britney qualifies, but definitely Madonna, Cher, Monroe, ...
As for Madonna (i'm a gay Madonnafan and most of the die hard fans are gay): she's not only a diva but adiva that has stuch up for gays many times. Vogue started out as a dance in gay discos before she made it a mainstream hit. Watch the Justify My love video and you'll see it breaks the sexual norms and boundaries; the people in it are all pretty much androgenous and that works very liberating, especially for gays. Her Human Nature video asks people not to think in strict categories.
Her shows also include many gay references, most of her dancers are (ofcoz) gay. Her current tour also includes a segment about forbidden love with a love dance between two male dancers.
She's been associated with some lesbians like Sandra Bernhardt and Ingrid Cesarez. She's best mates with many guys (among them Rupert Everett). And ofcoz her brother Christopher is also gay.
Those are few reasons why Madonna is the ultimate gay icon :-)

Because they are strong women, they have a lot of confidence, a lot of success,,, in their time they where leaders in fashion, they are nice persons...... they play with their images a lot,,, their songs have inspired lots o generations not only gays,,,and most of all the three of them have accepted gltb communities and express that felling when ever they can....i admire them because their career, there effort to keep on the top....not because i what to be like them,,,,,, i mean dress up, jaja

first please don't say icon and brittney in the same sentence, she's a mere babe in the woods at this point.cher, madonna, tina turner, patti labelle, eartha kitt, are women who have endured, they have risen to the top on pure tenacity and talent. we identify with them because they've lived the outsiders life rose to the top and loved us all the way there.they are diva's and we are there devoted disciples.............we've connected on a spiritual level with their music and lives, their triumphs are ours. go back however far you want it's the same thing, gay men identify with strong women because they've had to fight twice as hard as a straight man to make it...........marlene dietrech, judy garland, and yes even liza minelli.
