You see red because the light is going through your eyelids which are tinted red from blood. Just like when you put a flashlight in you mouth your cheeks glow redish.

I always thought it was just the light passing through the blood vessels in the eyelids. I suppose it could also be the reflection of the vessels inside the eye.

Flesh transmits red wavelengths better than other colors. Your eyelid acts as a color filter, and only red colors get through so that's what you see.

You're seeing the light coming through your eyelids. Like when someone puts a flashlight in their mouth and turns it on and you can see through their cheeks.
