People with any level of cognitive ability - from severely mentally retarded to genius level - can have behavior problems. One characteristic of people with ADHD is that they have poor impulse control. This means that you don't stop to think about the possible consequences of your actions - you just go ahead and do (or say) something. Since you know you have problems in this area, you can start doing something about it. Are you in any work programs, or do you have a counselor or social worker? There are programs to help people learn and practice appropriate behavior.

Of course they can!!!!
I thought Ritalin was for ADD, being "hyper" isn't always a sign of ADHD. I learn something new every day. There are many new drugs out there to treat the symptoms you have, possibly your doctor can prescribe something better suited for all your symptoms. You can't hide behind your mental condition to excuse your behavior. I can tell by your question that you know the difference between right and wrong. Sometimes my son (who is much like you) gets so upset and he acts out like a much younger child than he is and he can't always stop the motion (even though you can see he tries). I've been told this is related to the ADHD. In therapy they showed him constructive ways to deal with his anger to avoid out of control behavior problems. He still has occasional melt down but he is much better. Discuss your symptoms with your doctor maybe therapy would help you too.

Yes - I have taught students with mild mental retardation for 9 years. You are one step ahead in that you realize that you are acting immature and have behavior problems - most individuals will think that their behavior is normal.

Have you looked into contacting your local community services board or ARC? These agencies have programs for adult with disabilities that can help with social skills instruction and behavior modificiation programs.

One idea would be to make a list of the behaviors that you don't like and come up with ideas to help you replace them - for example, if you find that you laugh loudly at bad times, think of different things that you could do instead of laughing loudly.

a lifeless ringer for human beings without disabilities, the disabled have reviews that help or preclude them in socal interactions. What little ones study from moms and dads, instructors and different caregivers can impact them in effective or negative techniques. merely because one has psychological retardation, does no longer mean they could have habit issues.

Yes, I am a nurse and my nephew is mildly retarded. You should talk to your doctor. He may be able to help you with medication or therapy. It is a plus that you see that your behavior is wrong. With help you CAN control your behavior.

The fact that you recognize what afflicts you is a huge step ford ward. Even highly intelligent people can not get help because they don't face their problems. For example, alcoholism. I wish you all the best.
