Late at night, get a backhoe and dig where you want it, make sure it's pretty deep, get some piranas, some gators, snappin turtles, some lily pads to make it look nice in the day time, a draw bridge of course so you can get in and out of your yard.....

Ah, discretion is always difficult when building a moat. Difficult enough to even sabotage the whole project unfortunately. I'd recommend scrapping that plan and trying something else a bit more realistic... like bear traps and rabid pit bulls for instance. That way, when you do catch someone you can count on them to scream in pain and terror as you release the dogs just as if he or she were being devoured by a hungry alligator.

Effective and easy on the wallet. Happy hunting!

Just put up a tall fence. That way, people won't see the moat. As for what to put in it, I always favored coating the lawn with ground cesium. that way, when someone steps in your yard, they get cesium on them. Then, if they fall into a water-filled moat...BOOM! Of course, your lawn would also explode when it rains, so I think alligators, or maybe piranhas are a good idea.

I love the fact that you want it to be discreet. If you figure it out let me know, I have some neighbors I'd like to keep out of my yard as well.

I'd stock the moat with sharks!

Once you have your moat, it cannot be discreet. You might have to line it with concrete (cement) so that the water doesn't soak into the soil.
Maybe snapping turtles?
Think about what will survive in your area...
Have fun? Living in a castle are we?

There is nothing discreet about a mote my friend. You might as well make everyone perfectly aware of it and just build it when you have the time. As for what to put in it, I suggest rubber duckies (they won't bite your leg off and it would make passer-bys think your loco).

I would put lots of small mouth and large mouth bass in them it and then invite me over to fish in your moat

discretely, no. and it's MOAT. if you do build it just build it. sig anice 6 foot wide, 6 or 7 foot deep ravine around your house and fill it with water and just put up biohazard signs everywhere.

I don't think you can discreetly build a mote. However, I think you should put pirhanas in it. No one will suspect that.

Well you could go the classic way and fill it with water and angry aligators or pirhanas or gophers. Or fill it with sharpened pungee sticks at various angles. It makes for stunning visuals when trespassers impale themselves and you don't have to worry about feeing them. as far as discrete methods of doing it...umm...uhhh...
