I am a smoker....it is not to challenge death....It is an inability to be stong enough to battle the urge. The urge is not simply the physical addiction, it is also a satisfaction. I can not explain it if you are a smoker, you know what I mean. I kind of is like a self indulgence. One day...I will probably die of a smoking related disease. No I am not happy about that and I do still hope that maybe I will be lucky, and somehow that won't ever happen(that is also part of it-denial). I have often thought that if quiting meant that I would live an extra fiftty years (healthy-not old and frail), then I would give it up in a heartbeat. But I know that my life will only be extended for about twenty years, and that those twenty years will only be years that I am for the most part, waiting to die. Therefore, since I enjoy smoking for whatever stupid reason, why deny the enjoyment for my short time here on Earth.

It depends what you mean, I would not call anything that kills an indulgence - examples?
As for the response about smoking - that is not an indulgence, it is also not that smokers are stupid or apathetic, they are addicts they know fine well how harmful it is and they do care, they simply have an addiction bypassing reason.

What, like drugs and skydiving? Everyday life is filled with risks. Some people are thrill-seekers. I think, personally, that it stems from modern civilization. I mean, think about it. Way back in the day, we were cave people. We spent every day avoiding Cave Lions, Dire Wolves, the Bird of Terror, that Wooly Rhino that just up and decided we needed to be splattered... We're missing that thrill. There are no more sabre-toothed beasties to weed us out. So we go seeking something that our body is naturally equipped to deal with: fear. And it makes every-day life seem pretty mellow and non-threatening when you've leaped from a plane and found yourself hurtling toward the ground with nothing to protect you but a sheet and some ropes. Skydiving ROCKS. You so need to try it, man.

Each individual is guided by the values he has set in his mind on things he/she knows. It is not easy to change the mind set. The problem is how deep rooted the knowledge that lead him/her to that mind set. Have you seen some plants that once happened to grow, then you cannot destroy it. Even if you burn it, again it will spring up from the roots. This is the our natures survive in our minds. So when a person values something more than his own life (he undervalues his own life), they do anything they like.
There are even people who kills themselves to reach the goal they have in the mindset.

For some its exciting- but for most I think its the risk taking that makes them indulge in things that are really risky. Most humans have an urge for thrill seeking and most things that give us a thrill are things that are quite risky towards our lives.

I take it you mean things like smoking and drinking?
What about mountaineering? Skiing? Riding motorbikes? Travelling by car/plane/train? Eating too much? Walking by a busy road? Being born?
It's life.

Because that's why I joined the army, to meet interesting people and kill them.
Now, I'm off for a nice blood cocktail before bed.

Example that springs to mind is the smoking of cigarettes - they don't care or don't believe what they have been told
