No. It enhances it. Materazzi is a punk.

Indubitably... many hardcore and casual soccer fans alike were disgusted with his brash act. Many will not remember him for his amazing skills and career, but rather for his headbutt of Materazzi. However, I read an interesting article in Time Magazine a few weeks ago that lauded ZiZou for doing something to stand up against the slander, profanity, and general poor sportsmanship that is so common in professional sports. The link below has the beginning of the article, but you'll have to pay to get the rest of it. It was definitely an interesting viewpoint, though I believe it won't convince enough people of Zidane's true value as a soccer player.

No, I don't think so. Most soccer enthusiasts are not naive to what happens on the football field and almost expect the odd fracas now and then. At the end of the day he is just a human being like anybody else. He has his faults too. But it doesn't detract from his obvious talent, ability and class on the pitch.

no, people will forget about it after a while, just like with maradona and drugs. He had a great career with many accomplishments and those are bigger and more important then a couple of his mistakes. Zidane was a great player, and that's what we should remember him as, not as the person who headbutted Materazzi.

no, materazzi deserved it although he should have had more discretion, afterall he's a veteran of the game not some rookie. wait until after the game and then you deal with materazzi. He will undoubtedly be remembered for his 1998 goal scoring making France world champs, but he will become just as the cricketer Hansie Cronje, superherb athlete, great person, but did one wrong thing that cost him his reputation. Zizou forever!!

I don't know, but he is now my favorite international soccer player. Anyone badass enough to headbutt some punk who insults you right there on the field is ok in my book. I would have done the same thing.

Of course not. In fact, it made him more popular. He got so much publicity, even here in the U.S., where it was talked about on every news program and the subject of many jokes. I think it probably made people look into his past accomplishments, and he gained some respect. Everyone, including non-soccer/football fans, knows who he is now.
