Talk to her along these lines; My dear sister, I love that dresser, the memories etc.etc.. are special to me because x & x.. And I would have liked to have had that in my bedroom, but it appears you and mom have all ready worked it out; if you can't release it to me (hopefully for the same attached memories)... knowing that this special dresser is in my dear sisters hands is comforting; however, sis... if you kick off, I want that dresser! .end.
And make sure everyone in the family knows who it goes too next, even if there is a divorce on her side, including mom etc... even write it down in a journal....
Now, not sure if that would work for you but that is what my brother did for me... he let me have something from our mother that ment alot too me, he recognized the fact but he made it clear that if I should tick off... he gets it and I appreciated him for his honesty and birthright to share in one of our mothers gifts.
If you are doing this because it is a beautifull piece of furniture and no attachment.... then that sucks as a need and a waste of my answer.

Because you are the oldest dosn't mean that you should get whatever you want. You have to be fair. Absolutely voice your admiration for the piece, but take into mind what other family heirlooms you may already possess.

If it is that important to you, then you should tell her. Maybe your sister wants something that is being left to you. I think that you should all sit down and talk about what things are memories of your family and growing up and who holds what more dear to them.

Your mother is free to leave her possessions as she sees fit. However, it can't hurt to mention to her that you admire that particular piece of furniture and you would be honoured to have it.

You should openly tell your mom that you want it and why. Maybe your sister doesnt really like it as much as you do. Just tell your mom and your sister how you feel about it.

tell her, if she still plans on giving it to your sister, ask your sister. If she wants it, leave it alone.
