i think many people underestimate him. he is ex-kgb. he's very intelligent, strong minded and rules with an iron fist. he has no reason to be devious or underhanded. russia controls most of the world's natural gas reserves. putin relishes this monopoly and is using it to make russia a world power again. natural gas is seen as a safe alternative to oil since we are on relatively good terms with russia. but putin holds all the cards and can therefore set all the terms.
i wouldn't say that i don't trust him but i wouldn't want to piss him off either.
