Actually I do care, but I'm too apathetic to think my opinions matter to anyone but myself.

The historian, Arnold Toynbee once said that "Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal, which takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice." And he's right, but our nation hasn't had an ideal or an intelligible plan in years...so we take what enthusiasm we had and enthusiastically slide right into our current apathetic state. But that's just my opinion put into focus by an imminent historian...it doesn't really matter cause no one cares anyway.

Your quite a protagonist! Apathy is a big problem, perhaps not our greatest though. I suppose with some exception, many of the people at Yahoo Answers care a little or they wouldn't bother trying to give good answers. So what are you doing about Apathy? That could mean a lot of things and also mean very little.

Interesting question Gorky!
Makes you wonder what is wrong with our countries, doesn't it.

I prefer to think that the people as a whole feel powerless to make any changes. Decisions are made by big political machines with a lot of money back-up (sad but true). Too many decisions involve international politics.
Things happening in our own back yard are often ignored and therefore people simply feel that no matter what they do, it will not result in any change for the better. In a way, one can't really blame them.
Perhaps one day the political system will see a need for change and then once more, people will become interested enough to affect a change.

There used to be an organization called the National Apathy Society but they sort of disappeared???

I might say that inaction is more common than apathy as there are a number of issues I care about, but do not have the time or resources to address all of them. I tend to focus on the environment, education, and animal care (not the PETA whacks, but actual animal shelters and pet rescues). I vote based on other issues as well, but am unable to devote more of my time or resources to issues such as the middle east crisis or crime. I think many people feel the same way, in that they care, but feel stretched so that they can do no more, so they choose their battles.

If you know of way for me to be able to invest time and effort into every cause I care about, please let me know. I vote, but needless to say that doesn't always work out.

Apathy, apathy is our cry
A-P-A-T-H-Y
Will they do it?
We don't care!
Apathy, apathy, everywhere!

I would almost say the problem is apathy paired with a sense of resignation. We don't care, because we feel they are going to do what they want, regardless of if we want it or need it.

Lack of apathy is a much more serious problem. Won't you all join me in a campaign to spread apathy?

I'm not sure the nation is apathetic just at the moment. The real problem is polarization toward issues that really will not affect our day to day lives... That is what I care about... relevance!
