At a small venue (200 max capacity), with a mid size crowd, cheap beer (pabst on tap), friendly bouncers, and a working sound system.

From my experience, it can vary a great deal. I have been in small clubs where the sound completely sucked, and i have been at big outdoor shows where the sound was great.
In fact, the best sound i *ever* heard was at the CNE Stadium in Toronto, in August of 1987. David Bowie, on his Glass Spider tour. I never imagined anything that big (50' speaker stacks) and that loud (*very*) could sound so clear. Great show, incredible theatrics, and indescribable sound.
(Bonus: Peter Frampton was the special guest guitar player on the tour!)

I loved the Salt Palace in the 80's. Now I would say USANA Amphitheater. It was nice seeing Ratt at a private club. I was up against the stage and no security in the way.
