The plot of the story is the main chunk of the action - it actually is what the book is about. The best thing to do is read the book! If this is for summer reading, you still have a few weeks left. If you don't understand the book, get the Cliff's Notes for it.

You should be able to determine the plot of a story by reading it and focusing on the main idea that the author is trying to get across. Everything should revolve around the main plot.

First, you must willing to actually read the story/book. Skimming won't get you anywhere. Then, while you are reading, you must constantly asking yourself: what is it about? write about what you think around the margin, connect the story to current events, culture, politics, anything that is possible. read the story as many times as you feel is needed. For heavy story/book- like Russian novels- it would take very long to actually finish the book.
Second, after you finish reading ask yourself, what is the author trying to say to the reader? why is it matter?
Lastly, warp all of your answers in one sentence or paragraph.
There you got your plot.
Hope this helps ^__^
