Cleaned the dishwasher with detergent and rinsed it. Tookfilters out and washed them in hot water and replaced them perfectly. Put it on a short rinse to give it a proper clean and it started spewing out foam!!! There is no water draining and it seems as though there is a blockage?? any ideas before my parents come back???

get a mate who has a van. go to a leading electrical store (comet, currys - somewhere like that), wait for approx 0.000005 seconds before one of their totally annoying members of staff approach you. this is where you would normally say "piss off mate", dont say that on this occasion, tell him you need a new dishwasher. he will be the happiest guy ever. you will then buy a dishwasher with every add on purchase imaginable to boost his commission, coz those tossers are good at talking you into it! throw it in the van, get it home, fit it in and bob's your uncle.

and the good thing is dishwashers are not that heavy!

If you put 'normal' washing up liquid in, it will foam. If you put clothes wash detergent in, same again.
Start by removing the bits of the filter at the bottom, and use a 'wet and dry' vacuum cleaner... not the normal type, one that will suck water.
Ordinary salt is an excellent foam killer. Run the dishwasher but do not put any dishwasher detergent in, just a few cups of salt in a bowl.Run the dishwasher. This should break the foam. The lack of the drain may be caused by a blockage, but if the pump is full of foam, then it will not pump.
If there is a blockage (and in any case, its a good plan) take 2lbs ordinary washing soda in a bowl, put in dishwasher, and run the dishwasher. The soda will clear all kinds of blockages, grease and gunge.
Good luck...its worked for me.
By the way, the 'Soda' trick works fine in the clothes washing machine too, removes all that greasy soap gunge. Same as dishwasher, throw 2lbs in, very hot wash, super clean and sweet.
Whos to tell, you may score lots of brownie points!!!!

Regular dishwashing detergent is the culprit. Repeatedly put it in drain cycle, let it empty, pour water in from a pitcher (NO SOAP!!!), put it in drain, and keep doing that. You've got to get ALL the dish detergent out of there. Shouldn't take more than about five rinses. Congratulations on wanting it to be clean. PS. The foam won't really do much harm, you'll just need to wipe up the bit of liquid left when the bubbles go away.

Have you used normal dishwashig liquid instead of proper dishwasher detergent? Scoop out as much as possible and put it on a rinse wash without using any soap.
Or make sure the rinse aid cover is closed.
Is there something in the sump - at the bottom of the filter. Remove the filter and look deep down into it.

The soap you used caused the foam. Until the soap is completely out of the dishwasher it will foam. Run as many rinse cycles as it takes.

It may appear to not be draining because of all the suds. I don't think anything is clogged. Your pump may be suds locked. A pump can not move suds so anything left in the machine cannot get pumped out. So continue to run it in rinse cycles until foam is gone. As mentioned, removing the foam by dipping it out will help a lot. Once the machine quits foaming you will probably see it drain properly.

Didn't read all the answers you got, so I hope I'm not repeating this one. Go to the store and get some defoamer they sell with the rental rug doctors. Add this to your dishwasher and run a cycle. Hopefully this will eliminate the foam and allow you to purge the detergent.
Next time you want to clean your dishwasher, use the cleaners out that are made for dishwashers.

You could try a little liquid draino, pour in the bottom of the dishawsher and for about 5 or 10 minutes, then run the rinse cycle.

Just to be sure you are using only dishwaher detergent correct? Do not use laundry soap or dishsoap.

Yeah, dont put any detergent in the dishwasher that isn't supposed to go in to a dishwasher otherwise it will foam like hell! Shouldn't there be a drain cylcle on it?

You mustn't have rinsed it properly after you cleaned it. You will have to open the door to stop it, but look away unless you want hot water in your face. Then you will have to empty it manually with a jug.
Then you will have to tell your dad. At least you were trying to be helpful!
