Problem with the DVD player is that it is likely that at least one of your children will not be able to see the screen properly, resulting in arguments in the back.
You are also likely to get arguments over what they watch.
If the children don't get travel sick then some books will go down well - possibly colouring books for the younger children.
When I was young we used to play Herbie - ( the Love bug was popular at the time) We would look for VW Beetles and yell Herbie whenever we saw one, winner being the one who saw the most first.
In town you can play Change at the traffic lights with the kids guessing when they are going to change to green, last one to call change, as long as the lights are still red wins, (this assumes the children have not twigged that they just need to watch for the lights for the moving traffic to change to red - if they haven't you can also baffle them by playing as well and beating them almost every time)
Eye Spy is also a good timewaster.
Whatever you do, just be ready for the constant barrage of "Are we there yet"
.

Your driving is very almost as undesirable as Harley's, yet no one drives worse than the recent Robin; Damien Wayne. in fact, did no longer he run you off a bridge overdue final twelve months? i think that's what you get for driving a stolen ambulance down the incorrect area of the line.

Blackpool? That sounds racist, very, very RACIST! Just kidding. ☺ You could get them some coloring books or puzzles, or have them listen to music. Bring some snacks. If all else fails, tell them to take a nap.
