It comes from the French word for cloth (toile). Originally the word toilet referred to al aspects of body care and hairdressing.

The word was later adapted to refer to a water closet which later evolved into a flush toilet with plumbing.

It used to mean wash room so it was a snobby way of saying WC the Americans can't even say toilet.

well for two reasons
1) calling it a bedroom would sound to weird
