He died in battle but was held to ransom in AUSTRIA ,it was only through the actions of his minstrel Blondel that anyone in England knew he was being held to ransom.

Richard Lionheart fled the country when he realised that Robin Hood MADE Marion. This was not widely reported at the time, but history will tell that Robin Hood MADE Marion instead of Girl Friday. The rest of the week he turned to his MERRY men.

He was there a while as John had trouble raising the money for his ranson.

He was off leading a Crusade and then was captured on his way back.
But actually, he didn't spend much time in England even when he WAS free. He considered the country to be one of his minor possessions and was much more interested in the holdings he inherited on the Continent.
