If you are talking about pictures/ images, depend on resolution

if resolution = 100pixels per inch. it means 100 pixel = 1 inch
if your resolution is 300pixel per inch. 100 pixels = 0.333 inch or 300 pixels = 1 inch

this varies per resolution. (a screen that is 1024 x 780 is 1024 pixels by 780 pixels, but can be any size). You just need to know the dpi of your media (dots per inch, i.e. pixels).

I've found that assuming 96 pixles per inch usually works pretty well.
