Does a new iPod import all of the songs/lisgts from iTunes unless they're deselected? It is my first?

Yes, and there is a checkbox in one of the editmenus you need to click to tell it to do that. Otherwise it will update all the songs regardless of whether they are checked or not.

Yes. This is the default setting. There is a way to go in and change that, but I don't remember how.
