Two reasons: 1) Mel Gibson made an anti-Semitic remark when he was arrested... which suggests the criticism that his film "The Passion of the Christ" had anti-Semitic undertones might have some validity. 2) Castro's hand-over of power is only temporary (at this point).
But otherwise I agree -- celebrities get too much attention from the media in this country. By talking more about "who did what" in the entertainment world than about the real issues going on in the U.S. or around the world, the media is crippling the public's knowledge and making us more susceptible to the misinforming spin that the various conservative and liberal think-tanks spew out (through the media). By keeping the public "entertained," major corporations and political groups can continue to do unethical and illegal things both at home and abroad... all with the full support of the misinformed American public.

Because everyone KNOWS...that the Castro's are dictators ...it's not REAL news becuase it has no WOW factor ...like if Fidel would pass away ...things would not change for Cuba because his brother would just take over where he left off.
Mel ...on the other hand has a reputation for being a really good guy who has an infectious smile and genuinely cares about people.
Then ...he invoked controversy with the movie The Passion of the Christ .......and overcame the controversy with the way he handled the situation. Now to see him arrested for drunken driving was a big shock to the American public....but the anit-semitic remarks are re-invoking the controversy that was originally fueled by the movie The Passion.
More fodder for the American public to chew on so it gets more coverage.
Sadly the news is all about shock value these days.

Okay. I have heard of both of them, and I heard about Castro first. So I don't know if Mel is getting more publicity or what.
I do know that the government has tried to keep celebrities in the news to keep the public eye off of them and out of the war. So we the people have been 'trained' in a way to care more about what is going on here with the Celebrities, rather than the rest of the world.
Plus, Castro is only giving his power away until he recovers from surgery. He isn't totally handing it over for good. Maybe it would get more attention if it was finalized.
And Mel isn't in jail anymore.. he is going into Rehab. FYI

Because American media has a political agenda. Mel Gibson made a very conservative movie that millions of people went to see. Therefore, the liberal media has been itching to find something to make him look bad.
It's their misfortune that it happened on a day with other big breaking news. However, instead of covering the real story about Castro, and maintaining a slight appearance of balanced reporting, they have just run with the Mel Gibson story.
In addition, they simply can't admit that Cuba is not a nice place to be. Showing the former Cubans in Florida dancing in the streets over the news of Castro's probable death does not fit their mold of "Communism is great."

This is all a way to put someone down that has made a mistake while in a drunken stupor. Please if anyone has ever been there you barely remember what you said. This is being overplayed just for something to spread dirt about someone else. No one could care less about Castro or Cuba. They all care that Mel Gibson is a big star and that he made the Passion of Christ need I say more. Lets forget all about all of his other movies Lethal Weapon that was not so Christ Like. So everyone can get off their high horse and come back to earth. People need to evaluate their own lives before they start condemning others.

I don't agree with you. I think that the two issues are covered separately, in different segments. The Castro story is the top international news story, and if you watch any newsbroadcast tonight, it will be featured prominently. I'm sure that if news broke that Castro was dead, every network would interrupt its regular program to cover it. No one, however, is on Gibson watch.
As for the gibson story, that's the top entertainment story. It is featured prominently on entertainment news shows, and also picked up in the entertaiment segment of all the networks.
I haven't seen how they're covering the gibson story on fox, though... can't comment on that, but my guess is that the Castro story has probably overshadowed Mel by now.

Because the media loves it when an actor, especially one that isn't afraid to speak his mind, is in hot water. Hollywood isn't in love with Mel Gibson and hasn't been since he released The Passion of the Christ, which is a great movie. No one in the media cares that Castro's brother is in control. wait until Castro dies and then the attention will shift.

You are soooo right! This is all about the media. People are so worried about what a drunk Mel Gibson feels. What about what's going on in the world around us, even in our own back yard? Human life means nothing anymore and it's a sad fact that the media needs to ride his di*k this way.

Because American media is bulls**t. And our priorities are all kinds of messed up. People would rather her about some rich hollywood drunk instead of hearing about a dictator giving up power for the first time in almost 50 years. I don't know who this reflects. Americans are so self absorbed at times.

I am willing to bet that most people have forgotten about Castro since the Soviet Union fell. The public is hungry for chinks in stars otherwise "perfect" lives. What a shame
