In this technology enriched society we find ourselves in, there will always be perplexities. Therefore, any answer may or may not meet your expectations. England has the same problem as America. The homeless need our help; but when we help them; they need to help themselves.

Yes there is real poverty in the UK. There are thousands of old people who only have a basic pension to live on - once they have paid rent, council tax, utilities etc. there is little left for food, even with social benefit help. In the days when they were working, during the 1930's if they had a job in the Great Depression, they did not earn enough to be able to afford a private pension. Many lost everything as a result of war and many do not have any family to go to for help. Now in their eight or ninth decade they are overwhelmed by modern technology and being of that generation, they are quite often too proud to go begging to the Government for help. So, when you see a very old person buying a small bag of shopping, realise that the few things in the shopping bag may have to last them a month until their next government hand out as that is all they can afford and pay rent as well - with many it is eat and go homeless, or have a small roof over their heads and go hungry.

Yes there is poverty in the UK. Like any country though it does tend to get pushed under the carpet - these people are the ones that no one cares about, and consequently they don't have a voice and are rarely acknowledged. I don't have the answers to it but it is there. Yes even when compared to other countries we do have our share of poverty - usually made up of people who have fallen through the cracks in the Social Care Systems of our country (for what ever reason). No I don't believe anyone needs to be homeless there is enough accommodation, but again these people have fallen through the cracks in the system, frequently because they have lost the will to try and deal with the various agencies that they need to deal with.

Of course there is poverty in the Uk, but its no good comparing the levels of poverty over here to somewhere like Thailand on account of its a different culture - we live differently to each other so what we regard as poverty in england is going to mean something different to like people in thailand or asia.
Unfortunatly in the UK people dont tend to let others know if they are highly strung in debt - its kind of a tabboo. In the UK we are more materialistic and instead of admitting our debt, we waste what little money we have on things that make us look wealthy whereas in thailand they dont pretend to be someone there not.
The majority of people in the world are living off the bones of their backsides - its just how you choose to show it that give poeple there ideas on the term "poverty"

People are homeless in Britain and if they were given the help, advice and support they need then many wouldn't be there. There are also some who suffer from mental illnesses who find that is the only way to exist, again because society has let them down in caring for them.
In that way no one really needs to be homeless but that doesn't mean it's there fault. We, as a society, need to do more to help the most vulnerable.

Sociologists and economists now measure poverty in two ways: Absolute poverty (starvation, no shelter) and Relative poverty (Can't afford a new TV). The UK has lots of the relative pover, but little if any absolute poverty. The concept of relative poverty was introduced because it has similar effects - it can reduce life chances, health, educational opportunities etc. There's no doubt that those suffering from relative poverty (e.g. in some inner city ares) suffer higher crime and mortality than more affluent areas.

Poverty is being experience worldwide. Being homeless is not just the only indicator to determine poverty of a country. The government is doing a lot to eradicate poverty..but there is also a lot of corruption happening..

There is REAL poverty in the UK. It usually affects children most and is brought on by bad management from parents or carers.
I have seen places where children in the uk ate the scraps from fish and chip papers that had been dumped in a bin.

There certainly is poverty in the UK. It comes along with just being a place since almost everywhere you go there's going to be someone who has been ruined by some unfortunate situation that they were put into.

Depends on how you look at it.
Sometimes homeless isn't as simple as making sure there are jobs for people. Some people have drug problems. Some are alcoholics. Some are mentally ill. Some choose not to work for whatever reason. Some don't have the skills or literacy to work.
