Various levels of the courts in the USA have forbidden the use of speeding cameras without the personal presence of an officer of the law. I don't know for certain if it's reached the Supreme Court level yet or not.

Until/unless the supreme court weighs in on it, the use of speed cameras can be contested.

Typically, speeding tickets range from a few dollars per mile over the limit to possible jail time for particularly reckless driving (in a number of jurisdictions, the arrestable speed is 30 miles over the limit or 50% over, which ever is less). Because of the way the US legal system works, regardless of the issuing entity (camera or person), these would be the penalties used.

In some cities they will indentify you and send a speeding ticket to your house. Most speeding violations are 75 - 100 us dollars.

yes, so far I've only gotten warnings. But, I think those are not fair. I was not even in my car when those occured, but since it was registered to me, so were the warnings. What you usually get is a bad picture of the back of your car showing your liscense plate and a message about how fast it was going and where and when.
