The state of Missisippi was named after the river. So The river came first.

I can't remember, but I think it was named after an Indian word or tribe.

The Mississippi River starts way up north in Minnesota a state named after the Minnesota Indians, why isn't it the Minnesota River ??

The head waters of the Mississippi River are one of the most beautiful things you could ever see.

The state was named after the river, not the other way around.

da Benchee: It is an Algonquin word meaning "big river"

Plus, the headwaters of the Misssippi are in northern Minnesota. That is where it "starts"

Because it starts in Mississippi and it would be very confusing if you tried to re-name it everytime it crossed a state border.
