Gmail is the best!
I guess that people use Messenger more because Gmail is relatively new and not everyone has switched yet. Well, sooner or later, everyone will!

Dont forget that Microsoft & Google are rivals and Microsoft is working with Yahoo to enhance its products' capabilities to grab Google's market share. Examples are infront of you. Use google talk and compare with yahoo messenger.

both msn messenger and yahoo messenger are much more popular than gmail. plus, msn and ym are now joined together for better features and to attract more users.

Gmail is nice, but it is not the same as a "direct" connection with a person that has a "IM" client.
like comparing apples to oranges.....

Cause its tiring switching e-mail accounts, especially when you have important mail in it,and use a lot of online services using it.
