They want to be hired as Government agents to crack down on fellow hackers

Hackers are very smart criminals who usually want to get your personal and private information, such as banking passwords, social security information, and credit card information, so that they can use that information for personal gain -- it's usually called identity theft.

Some other hackers are mischief makers who want to change information inside databases for either personal gain or to cause havoc. Sometimes, it's a very smart student trying to change his grades in a school computer.

Either way, hackers are criminals.

Depends on the hacker. Some are looking for financial gain - either by collecting names, social security #, bank passwords, etc., or (this is fairly new) holding machines ransom.

Some are out there simply for mischief - they either want to take down as many machines as possible, or co-opt your machine (making it part of a "bot-net") to take down certain targets.

And, some are just plain curious - folks who believe they should be able to go where they want, and find whatever information that they want.
